Rule of Life

You are a whole person.

Your life is one connected whole, and every part of you affects the rest. Being intentional about each part of it is good, and necessary.

Rule of Life looks at your life in six Areas: lenses for thinking it through. Each grows stronger with the time you give it, and weakens when it's left alone. Some are about caring for yourself, and some are about how you interact with others.

Caring for yourself

  • Spiritual

Prayer, reflection, silence, and rest. The inner life.

  • Mind

Learning, creativity, play, and how you feel.

  • Body

Your physical being: movement, food, sleep, and health.

Interacting with others

  • Relationships

Family, friends, community, and serving others.

  • Work

Meaningful work, done well, and its limits.

  • Financial

Money as a tool that supports the other Areas: spending, saving, and giving.

Choose where to grow.

Review where you see the chance to grow. Then define simple things you can do on the days you choose, each connected to one of the Areas of life, that help you grow there.

For example, if you want to take better care of your body, a Rule might be “Exercise for 20 minutes” or “Do 20 push-ups.” Here are some other examples:

  • “Ten minutes of quiet in the morning”Spiritual
  • “First hour on my most important work”Work
  • “Read to the kids”Relationships

Write what you'll do, not the outcome you hope for. “Lose ten pounds” is a goal; “Walk after dinner” is a Rule. Rules stay with the specific things you do, the activities themselves, and the goals take care of themselves.

Keep each Rule small, something you can do even on a hard day. Small wins build momentum, and momentum is how habits form.

Practice it, then look back.

Each day, the app shows the Rules for the day, and one tap checks one in. Each week, you can reflect on how your week went across your Areas and the Rules completed. As the habits take root and you grow, adjust your Rules to match. We expect it, and we encourage it: a Rule that fit last season may not fit the person you're becoming.

  1. Write

Define a few Rules and the days each one is for.

  2. Practice

Check in regularly, completing what you planned.

  3. Reflect

Each week, see how you lived, day by day and Rule by Rule.

  4. Renew

Review your Rules each month and adjust them as needed.
